Étoile 1 – 1 EGS Gafsa, and the headaches won’t stop

By: Houssem | January 18th, 2009

I really thought we would turn things in our favor in this new year. How silly of me, right ? This week saw us drop points on two occasions, away to La Marsa and home to Gafsa. Two fixtures we didn’t even worry about in the old days (2007, the tremendous victory in Cairo, Japan, Chermiti, Chikhaoui, Gelson … it all seems a long time ago now). I didn’t watch any of these games since Tunis 7 and Tunis 21 only bother to broadcast games involving Espérance and Club Africain, but from what I’ve read and seen, the team is still agonizing, and Gernot Rohr unable to impose his touch on the gameplay and tactics. Today, the El Menzah stadium was packed, as the Espérance fans celebrated their club’s 90 years of existence with a 2-1 win against Stade Tunisien, whereas Étoile only managed to score through a defender, Felhi this time, apparently with his hand, but the ref is the son of the guy who didn’t see Maradona’s “hand of God”, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree; and eventually conceded the usual equalizer late in the game. To make things worse, the other contenders Club Africain won their away fixture in Kasserine and confirmed their second place 5 points behind Espérance. We are now 8 points behind and the title hopes fade a little more each week.

Somebody needs to shake the foundations of this team. The players who already won everything possible with the club have clearly nothing more to offer, and new, title hungry rookies are the new blood we need in order to make a fresh start. Moez Driss has gone on a shopping frenzy during this transfer window : After the three signings I mentioned here and Boulâabi, two new recruits joined the club last week : Mauricio Mendoza Renteria (28 years old, from Milonarios Bogotá, Colombia), and Charles Negedu (19, Kaduna United, Nigeria). I still don’t see the point in signing so many foreign players since we can only play with 3 non-Tunisians, bench included.

If you’re an Étoile supporter, being patient is the only thing you can do …

I think l’Etoile has entered into a new phase filled with turmoil until this new coach finds his magic formula. So far, he does not seem to know how to make any positive changes quickly. He seems to be working alone, which is scary because Etoile does not have that much time before our hopes even for a second place fade away! Where the hell is Zaaboub? Why is the team undergoing so many radical changes that apparently are not producing the desired results? Why not introduce changes slowly to keep the momentum we had going? L’Etoile needs a very tough-minded coach, someone like Faouzi Benzarti, to make those slackers of players take their responsibilities more seriously! Those sons of bitches need to be shaken. They need to be reminded that to play for Etoile is an honor, and if they don’t understand that, they should be marginalized to know the value. Despite his shortcomings, I’m starting to miss DeCastel. Very diappointing!!!!
