Tunisian Showdown, Part I
By: Houssem | November 7th, 2008
We’re one day ahead of the CAF Cup final between Étoile du Sahel and Club Sfaxien, and going through some rough times for the club from the Sahel’s pearl. After practically – not quite technically – firing Michel Decastel, Étoile managed to grab a win in Kasserine against bottom of the table ASK. Now that the harm is done, there couldn’t be a harder test than this two-leg final against the Sfaxians who have been regaining form after a slow season start. CSS coach Ghazi Ghrairi will probably strengthen midfield by adding Blaise Koissy into this compartment. He will – as usual – rely on Opoko and former national starlet Haykel Gmamdia in attack.
Change will be needed on Étoile’s side as well. Ahmed Mida will probably jump in for the suspended Mohamed Ali Nafkha. The two other absentees will be Mehdi Ben Dhifallah, currently training separately to regain some much needed fitness, and Belgacem Toniche, not enlisted in the CAF competition roster. The most important aspect of this first leg will be preventing CSS from scoring, which shouldn’t be a problem given the tremendous Mathlouthi, Felhi and Jemal are currently enjoying. Besides Mida’s contribution, the fact that we’re allowed to have 5 non-tunisian players on the team will certainly be useful to midfield and attack with Sacko and Tembo possibly being part of the starting line-up. It would be interesting to see which players you guys would start if you were the coach. The only guess I can make right now is the score : 0-0 in Sfax, 2-0 in Sousse, and a fourth CAF Confederation Cup trophy on the shelf for us.

Houssem, your first guess is quite correct. I feel pretty good about l’Etoile after watching today’s game. I thought they played quite well and showed once again that Etoile can rebuild in no time! Great coaching job, in my opinion. I think it may end up 2-0 in Sousse, as you guessed. Bravo ESS!!!
